Staff bios

Lester Engel

Lester Engel leads the company’s detailed, quality-focused testing and services. He oversees the company’s lab, continually adding new equipment and techniques. He continues to personally perform failure analysis on metals, cermets, plastics and other materials. He renders expert opinions, giving depositions and testimony for litigation support. Les helps manufacturers select materials and processes, develop product designs and other specifications.

Les also has experience as the chief metallurgist for Brown Boveri Turbomachinery and as a metallurgical engineer for the Aircraft Engine Group of General Electric, where he focused on material selections for hot aircraft and marine gas turbine components. His GE career began in Nuclear Systems Programs, where his work included serving as the principal investigator on three NASA programs.

Les earned his undergraduate and master of science degrees in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati.

James Brusso

Jim Brusso brings keen expertise to Engel Metallurgical and its clients, performing failure analysis; rendering expert opinions, giving depositions and testimony for litigation support; providing technical support for materials and process development and improvement; and developing and reviewing various product designs, materials, and process details. Jim provides materials expertise in the automotive, agricultural equipment, dairy, medical, nuclear energy, and petrochemical industries. He is also Engel Metallurgical's Technical Manager and Quality Manager.

Jim has worked with Engel Metallurgical since 2000. Prior to that, he held several positions with The Timken Company in Ohio, where his responsibilities included establishing the company’s machinability testing laboratory, team leader for product development projects, managing the company's application metallurgical laboratory, and providing technical review of internal processing and testing standards to satisfy ISO 9000 / QS 9000 registration.

Jim earned his undergraduate degree, Master of Science and Ph.D., all in Metallurgical Engineering, from Michigan Technological University in Houghton. Jim is a past member of the Materials Science and Engineering External Advisory Board at Michigan Tech.

He is a registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Minnesota and a member of ASM International, National Association Of Subrogation Professionals, and the American Foundry Society.

Ethan J. Ambroziak

Ethan Ambroziak joined Engel Metallurgical in 2013 with experience in failure analysis and materials testing. Since joining Engel Metallurgical, he has provided materials engineering expertise to numerous clients. Specific activities have included mechanical testing and failure analysis of various materials, including metals, cermets and plastics. Ethan has experience with mechanical, metallurgical, and chemical testing of various alloys, including ferrous (steels/irons), nickel, aluminum, zinc, and copper-based materials.

Ethan earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.

Ethan is a member of ASM International and International Metallographic Society.

Jay E. Anderson

Jay Anderson joined Engel Metallugical in 2013 with extensive project management experience. Jay has provided materials engineering support to a variety of clients since joining the company, with experience in mechanical testing and failure analysis of various materials. Jay has experience with quality control testing, corrosion testing, and accelerated life testing of products and materials. Jay has also utilized design of experiments (DOE) for test setup and monitoring to improve products and processes.

Jay earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities.
